I think it's fairly obvious that we have an obesity problem here in America, and in many other countries around the world. Oddly enough though I propose that we don't have a "weight loss" problem, but rather there is a problem sticking to a plan for most people.
According to a study done from Oxford University, within 3 to 5 years, about 80 percent of all people that go on a weight loss program have regained all of the weight, plus some.
In comparison the relapse rates for drug, alcohol, and tobacco dependency have been in the range of 50-90%.
What that really means is that we don't necessarily have a weight loss problem, but rather a problem with sticking with what helps us lose the weight in the first place. Unfortunately though, regaining the weight doesn't usually take years, but rather months.
If this happens to be the case, then I propose that we start putting more of our attention into figuring out why you haven't been able to stick with the weight loss program, and what exactly should you do about it?
Keep in mind though, no matter how good your diet or nutrition plan may be, if you have a hard time sticking to it, then it won't do much good in the overall scheme of things.
A list of the top reasons why most people fall off weight loss wagon:
1. Lack of Focus: You know this can be said for almost every area of our lives that we don't find ourselves succeeding. If you lack goals and don't have them in writing, then it's kind of like trying to pin the tail on a donkey in a pitch dark room.
2. Lack of Priorities: Where exactly does your weight loss goal fit in with all of the other things that you have going on in your life? If your goal is to lose fat, then obviously eating bad foods or drinking a lot isn't going to help. Which is more important?
3. Lack of a Support System: Lets face it, if you're going in all alone, it's a little bit harder to be accountable. Having someone go through it with you can help make the difference of waking up early in the morning to hit the gym or keeping you in bed telling yourself that you'll go after work. When the going gets tough, having someone for support makes a big difference.
4. Lack of Personal Accountability: Keep track of your goals and hold yourself accountable. Write down what you eat if you're having a hard time with your weight loss. Use a progress chart to show where your weaknesses may be.
5. Lack of Long Term Vision: So you were losing weight at a super fast pace, but slowly started losing less and less. Does this sound familiar? It happens to everyone though so make sure to have a long term vision. Understand you didn't put the weight on overnight and you certainly won't take it off overnight either.
6. Lack of Planning: One of my personal favorites is to bring a workout journal with me to the gym. Every day I write down what exercises I did, how many reps, and at what weight. If you fail to plan, then your plan is to fail. Go in knowing what you did that way you're not playing the guessing game.
7. Lack of Balance: Interested in knowing a secret? You can actually eat stuff that isn't good for you sometimes. It's ok to eat pizza, or a big juicy hamburger, as long as it's done in moderation. For instance reward yourself 1 or 2 times a week with a "cheat meal". Just make sure not to fall off the wagon long term. Remember, slow and steady wins the race.
8. Lack of Personalization: Just because a diet or nutrition plan might have worked for someone else, that doesn't mean that it's right for you. Make sure your plan fits your lifestyle and body type.
There you go. If you've been making any of these mistakes at least now you know. If you can apply these tips, then there is absolutely nothing that will hold you back from losing the weight and keeping it off.
